Soft Shoulder

US$17,000.00

Works in Jan’s Market Makers series reflect on the role that branding, marketing, and social media have played in our lives.

Soft Shoulder incorporates a posed self-portrait of Jan set into a vintage mid-century advertisement for a new tire from the Goodyear Corporation, á la American portrait artist Cindy Sherman, as a means of lampooning the advertisement’s notion that a woman can't change her own tire.

In this manner, the work reflects on how advertising and the marketing-message medium can ‘get it wrong,’ giving voice to prejudices like sexism; and some of the ‘darker sides’ of contemporary culture.
